Our Story
The Good Alchemyst was founded in the summer of 2020 by Austin and Chris in Salt Lake City, Utah when they both were studying chemistry at the time. We met as students and quickly found that we both had a drive and passion for chemistry not only in class but also in our everyday lives.
One of the labs for our courses had us make a basic soap. We made it using vegetable oil and it was a great experience to learn the chemistry behind it and see it first hand, however the soap itself was not good. It smelled bad, it was slimy in texture, and overall not pleasant. We took upon us the challenge to make a soap that has the characteristics of what we consider to be a good bar of soap.
After some research and planning we made our first batch of soap. It turned out better than what we had made in the lab class but not nearly as good as we had hoped. We continued to do more research looking at fatty acid contents of different oils and what those different fatty acids did in soap and remade our plans and formula and tried again. With the help of friends and family we have made a soap that we are very proud of and have many of the qualities that we want!! After some encouragement we started The Good Alchemyst to sell our soap and get our amazing creation out to others.
Our name refers back to the early practice of alchemy, which contributed to many discoveries and foundations of today's modern chemistry. We make cold-process soap, while keeping the components of the soap simple, only including ingredients that we believe elevate the quality of our products. All our soaps are made with high-quality ingredients to make the best product we can offer. We are always learning and looking to make things better as we learn more about chemistry and the world around us.
In continued pursuit of our education we have found ourselves now in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite the long move we are still making and selling our amazing soap! We are hoping to continue to grow and develop new amazing products in the near future as we continue to receive support and encouragement from our amazing friends, family, and customers! Austin recently graduated with his bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. He is currently building his career and experience in chemistry in preparation for his next steps towards future career and education.
Chris is currently working on his master’s in chemistry and has a couple more semesters to go before he graduates. He actively participates in a research lab on campus, and is constantly learning new and amazing things. He loves chemistry and is full of new ideas, and has a strong drive to tackle new concepts with our products!
